From World Traveler to Future Pinehurst Resident. Say Hi to Faith Verbal.

Some of the most interesting people you’d ever hope to meet turn out to be depositors at The Ridge Pinehurst. Faith Verbal has a spirit and intellect that seem to take life by the lapels and say, “Let’s do this like we really mean it!”
The granddaughter of a pioneering surveyor from upstate New York, who mapped lands that only Native Americans had walked on, Faith grew up in rural Wisconsin.
She attended a one-room elementary school for eight years. After high school, Faith received a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. She graduated with degrees in education and psychology.
Faith taught herself to play nine musical instruments, including trombone, marimba and vibraharp. Her father was a violinist. Her mother played piano. Faith’s sister composed songs. During the Depression years, the family would play together, especially on Sundays.
After her undergraduate years, Faith embarked on what would become a 38-year career in education. She taught in Wichita, Kansas public schools for 15 years, and later served as principal at a consolidated school. After completing her master’s degree from Kansas State University, Faith and her husband Ed moved to Jefferson County, Colorado where Faith became an administrator in Special Education, setting up programs for students with learning disabilities.
They eventually built a home in West Lakewood, where they raised their son and daughter. Ed, who is now deceased, retired at 55. The couple was active in music, church and travel. Faith herself has visited 50 countries. After she retired at age 62, they traveled with Elder Hostel, the company that created the Road Scholar learning expeditions for older lifelong learners. This took Faith and Ed through Europe, Australia, China and Africa.
Faith was active in sports throughout high school and college. She played competitive softball until age 65. She loves the snow and she loves Colorado. She was a skier until age 67.
Today, Faith continues her musical interests, playing piano at chapel service on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at local retirement communities, and as a member of the band The Wild Coyotes.
“One of the things I look forward to at The Ridge Pinehurst is staying active through exercise and keeping relationships going. It’s important not to isolate yourself. From what I hear, the Engage program at Pinehurst will help with that.”
Faith has never lived in a retirement community. Why The Ridge Pinehurst?
“It’s time. My son and daughter-in-law prefer that I be relatively close by. I’m familiar with other communities in this area, and I prefer something new rather than an older community.
“I like the master plan of Pinehurst, and also that they’ll offer progressive levels of care, so I won’t have to move out of the community if someday I need more care. That’s important to me.”
Faith also loves the fact that her apartment will have a balcony.
“That may have sold me on the place. I thought, if they planned for a balcony, they’re looking at how you’d feel when you live there. And that would enhance your living, if you could be outside a little bit.
“I’d like my neighbors to know that I appreciate family and relationships. I love music and I’m still playing. I have a strong Christian faith, so I would want to become involved with people. I have a master’s degree in counseling. I enjoy listening and being there for people.”
Imagine the fascinating stories a citizen of the world like Faith Verbal has to share. If you’re already a depositor, you may get to hear them firsthand.
